Today's Rant: Anxiety Sucks

Anxiety Sucks.

Apparently, that's one of those things that we all deal with.  And I am made to understand that it is a particularly prevalent condition among graduate students.

(There's something very wrong. I just know that something awful is going to happen!)

And I really hate the anxiety dance.

It starts with feeling utterly overwhelmed.

So, I hide, because it somehow makes sense.  Anxiety can follow me anywhere, but if you can't find me, you can't make me do anything while I'm busy not losing my mind!

Then the anxiety starts to subside just enough for me to realize everything I've been avoiding.

That's when the second wave hits.

(I'll just stay here.  Anything else is just too much.  I'm sure things will be better if I stay here.)

This is the paralyzing wave.  I feel frozen; unable to actually start dealing with anything I've avoided, because starting to do anything draws attention to what I haven't been doing.

That's when I hit an impasse.

(Everything is perfect when I'm in bed. I'm going to just stay here.)

The problem with anxiety is that it doesn't always matter that I know its irrational.  It often doesn't matter that I know that it is unbalanced thinking.  I even know that the choices that seem easiest when I am most anxious are oftentimes the exact opposite of what I should be doing to alleviate and reduce my anxiety!  But I can't just think my way out of anxiety every time it strikes.

Anxiety and depression are bosom-buddies.  They love their quality time together; they sit in a pathetic pile of pajamas, surrounded by books that go unread, and clothes that go unwashed.  They obsessively list all the ways the apartment is going to hell, the ever-growing list of tasks that need to be done will eventually destroy the world, and then they repeat all of the most manipulative guilt-inducing speeches they've ever heard.  When they grow weary of talking they turn on Project Runway and ponder society's obsession with cheekbones and thigh gaps.

My worst problem with this dynamic duo is figuring out how to move past my impasses and kick these nasty sisters out of my home.

This is especially important with my doctoral program.  These nasty twins of anxiety and depression often tell me stories about how my advisor is against me, mad at me, etc.

For example, over two months ago, my advisor saw me at a meeting and told me to check in with her.
But, of course, I didn't.
Because reasons.

So, when I got an email from her, checking in with me, last week, I felt some serious anxiety.
Because, well, according to those mean girls, its like this:

(except that instead of summer it was winter, and the weather was mostly rainy instead of sunny.)

But, yes, there's even a tall clock tower.

And supposedly no interruptions,
or distractions,
because I have no classes right now.

But, really, I had nothing to show for the time I've had to do all this writing.

Nothing.

"Shame on You" say the nasty sisters in my head

But thankfully, they don't get the last word.

(What if we just cuddle up together?  It feels better to be not alone, doesn't it?)

I talked with a few of my close peoples about my fears, the email from my advisor, etc.  I found a way to respond to my advisor's email a few days later.

Sometimes I just need the right person to help me with a reality check, because reality is usually so much better than the world in my head.

I am really thankful for those who are close to me who understand this irrational headspace in which I find myself trapped.  I appreciate their ability to draw different pictures, tell different stories than the fear-riddled depictions I come up with in the midst of anxiety.

I showed up for the meeting my advisor scheduled with me.  I got the best pep talk and reality check of my academic year.

Daily life is filled with ebbs and flows, the tides come in and go back out, the waves continually run up on the shore.  A large part of the sand is composed of shells slowly broken down by the movement of the ocean's waters.

I know that life wears on me.  I know that last week, the tide feels like its high, and the shore feels much more like the rocky N. CA. Pacific coastline than the easy going Atlantic coast of SC and GA.  I am thankful that, for now, I feel like the tide has gone back out.

My Jubees December Treat!

So, this month, I got the single pair of earrings from Jubees Box.  They are adorable!

This simple pair of button earrings are wooden with a lovely pattern of multi-colored feathers.

They are a little larger than the size stud earrings I usually wear, but they actually look really good on me.

Jubees is a monthly subscription box that specializes in stud earrings made from buttons and cabochons.  I think they're adorable!  They have two subscription plans: $6.99/month for a single pair or $14.00/month for four pairs.  They also have a single month plan for four pairs of earrings.

For more information, check out their website!  (Heads up, right now, they don't offer any referral benefits. They are also constantly running deals, so maybe try them out with one of those!)

Missing Stories - Reflections from the Ohlone Greenway

Have you ever come across an apparently random, but definitely human made, sight?

The Bay Area's Ohlone Greenway runs through my apartment's property.  For those of you lucky enough to not know what this is, its a pedestrian & bicycle pathway that runs near the BART tracks from El Cerrito all the way down to North Oakland.  Needless to say, we get lots of foot traffic of all types right through our apartment property.

Because of our geographical situation, I've seen all kinds of things, and I often wonder about the back story.

This morning I was walking the Barley-Puppy on the Ohlone Greenway, and on the way back to the apartment we passed this neat arrangement of seemingly random items.

A broken scooter with the upright bar, handles, and wheels missing.
One wheel that definitely doesn't go with the scooter base.
Two shoes - mismatched - of the same variety; neon colors and cleats.

Stuff doesn't just fall into picturesque positions like this.

Someone arranged this junk.

That means, someone, at some point had all of these random items in their possession.

What is the story, or stories, of this half-rotted, broken scooter, a lone wheel, and two sad, mateless, neon, cleated shoes?

Poppy Austin Eye Cream Review

I think we're all in search of that perfect eye cream, aren't we ladies?  Well, Poppy Austin has put in its bid for that spot.  Here are my thoughts on this product.

I love the appearance of this bottle.  I like the clean lines and simplicity.  The emphasis on green tea and vitamin c certainly makes this cream seem promising.  The bottle is a great size for those who travel, especially since the label says that this cream is great for the whole face.

The texture is certainly pleasant, but the unscented nature of this lotion just leaves me underwhelmed.  I've used other eye creams that are also unscented, but rely on some of their ingredients to pack a punch with a lovely aroma.

Poppy Austin's Eye Cream does reduce puffiness and dark circles when applied twice daily.  But for $22.55 on Amazon (affiliate link) for a 1 fl oz bottle, this product lacks a competitive edge in my book.

Mad for Moisturizing Hyaluronic Serum by Joyal Beauty

When Joyal Beauty requested that I review three of their serums recently, I was ecstatic.  Unfortunately, the first serum I tested struck out in my book.  However, their Ultra Hyaluronic Moisturizing Serum was definitely a home run!

Joyal Beauty is a cruelty-free company, and all of their products are made in the USA.  Additionally, all of their products are sulfate and paraben free.  This particular serum is vegan and contains non-GMO ingredients.  The bottle has an attractive and feminine look that clearly outlines the ingredients in this serum.

I greatly enjoyed using this Ultra Hyaluronic Moisturizing Serum by Joyal Beauty.  The serum has a smooth texture and feels great on my skin!  I love that it adds a layer of moisture under my nightly moisturizer or daytime BB cream; this is particularly helpful during the winter months.  Plus, it has a very light and pleasant scent.  I appreciate it when skincare products smell pleasant since I wear them so close to my nose!

Joyal Beauty's Ultra Hyaluronic Moisturizing Serum  (affiliate link) is available on Amazon for $23.85 for 1 fl oz.  This price seems a bit high for me in general, but given the quality of this product, the price is not unreasonable.

Verdict: Yay

December Birchbox #2 Unboxing and Review

My initial thoughts on this December Birchbox:

Here are the goodies that I got for my main account Birchbox in December:

Coola Tinted SPF 30 for Face:
I ended up with two of these little tubes between my two boxes this month.  Overall, it has a great texture and leaves skin feeling very good.  But, as I said in my other post, I wish that this had a bit more coverage.
Verdict: Meh.

Embryolisse Lait-Creme Concentre:
Much like the Yu-Be Moisturizer from my other box, this tiny tube must be filled with gold.  Its in that little box there on the right.  The sample container is a metal tube (interesting).  But its a great little moisturizer.  I'll enjoy the rest of this sample, but won't be investing in the full-size.
Verdict: Meh.

Hayadi Relief Hair Mask:
I'll be honest, I haven't sampled this one yet.  Holiday travel really takes it out of a girl.  This whole west to east and back west thing is not my favorite way to travel.  I can't wait to get back east of the Mississippi!
Verdict: I dunno!

Klorane Dry Shampoo with Oak Milk:
This is a powerful little dry shampoo.  The scent is clean and pleasant.  I enjoyed its performance; it made my hair feel and look cleaner without making it gritty.  I'll certainly consider this one when I'm in the market for a new one!
Verdicts: Yay!

Mirenesse Mattfinity Lip Rouge:
Okay, I really can't figure out what all the fuss is about.  This product just feels gross on my lips.  I couldn't get it to go on without looking totally glopped on like too much icing on a cupcake.  The instructions to let it set for 12 seconds need to be in bold since I didn't even see them until I'd about given up on this little vial of lip stain.
Verdict: No.

Sour Oranges. No go for Joyal Beauty's Super Brightening Vitamin C Serum.

I really enjoyed reviewing Joyal Beauty's Timeless Skin Renewal Serum, so when they requested that I review three additional serums, I was thrilled!  After experiencing their Timeless Skin Renewal Serum, my expectations were pretty high.  The first of three that I sampled and am reviewing is their Super Brightening Vitamin C Serum.

According to Joyal Beauty, 20% of their Super Brightening Vitamin C serum is a super-stable formula of Vitamin C, which ought to help brighten skin, reduce the impacts of sun exposure and protect skin from free radicals.  Overall, their product description is quite impressive.

The serum itself, however, just doesn't deliver.  The scent is terrible.  The amount of product required for full application seems excessive.  And I really couldn't tell any difference in my skin tone or complexion after using this product for several days.  To top it all off, this serum costs $26.92 for 1 fl oz on Amazon.com.  There is no way that I could justify recommending this product to my readers.

In conclusion, after reviewing a similar product from a competing company, Joyal Beauty's Super Brightening Vitamin C Serum  (affiliate link) left me super disappointed.

Verdict: Sad Face.

Huge Bottle of Argan Oil!

Since I am such a huge fan of InstaNatural, I was really excited about being invited to review their Argan Oil.  InstaNatural's Argan Oil is 100% Pure Argan Oil that is Certified Organic by the USDA and Ecocert ICO.  Like their other products, this oil is not tested on animals.  It has a suggested shelf life of 12 months.  The first thing that impressed me about InstaNatural's Argan Oil is the size of this bottle!

When InstaNatural invited me to review their 100% Pure Certified Organic Argan Oil, I realized that I had no idea what to do with argan oil.  So, I was very appreciative of the wide variety of suggested uses provided by InstaNatural on the bottle's label.

This oil is a wonderful multipurpose moisturizer for face, skin, hair, and nails.  The pump dispenser is great for applying argan oil as a body moisturizer, hair treatment or face moisturizer.  However, the pump is much more difficult to work with when applying the oil to nails/ cuticles than a dropper would be.

My favorite way to use argan oil is after shaving my legs; one tip I read on the internet was to rub this oil in before completely drying my legs.  It worked really well.  My legs felt moisturized, but not greasy, all day long!

You can find InstaNatural's 100% Pure Certified Organic Argan Oil  (affiliate link) on Amazon; it is $19.37 for a generous 4 fl oz.  Compared with other similar products, this is a great price point for this product.

Verdict: Yay!

Walmart Winter 2014 Box Unboxed & Reviewed!

So, let's get this box open!

Here are all of the goodies!

Verdict: Meh, but for $5 Yay!

This is definitely still a great little $5 box, but I was seriously underwhelmed after Walmart's Fall Beauty Box.  I'll definitely use everything in here, but with two blister samples that I could have gotten for free with internet deals, I'm just not that thrilled.

This Serum is like Summertime in a Blue Bottle!

Alright, my lovely readers, I'm seriously in love with InstaNatural.  This time its because of their Vitamin C Serum.

I talked about the benefits of Vitamin C in an earlier post.   InstaNatural's Vitamin C Serum is composed of 20% vitamin C as well as Hyaluronic Acid, Ferulic Acid, Argan Oil, Rosehip Oil, Seabuck Thorn Oil, and Pomegranate.  These ingredients are supposed to work together to smooth, moisturize, and protect your skin.  This little bottle definitely delivers!

First off, I love the smell of serum!  Its like walking through an orange grove at the height of summertime.  The bright orange tint dissipates quickly when applied to the skin.

In terms of performance, this serum smoothed, moisturized, and improved my skin complexion.  I noticed a more even skin tone, and a healthy glow after using this serum in conjunction with InstaNatural's Vitamin C Moisturizer for a week.

If you're in the market for a vitamin c serum, I would highly recommend considering investing in InstaNatural's Vitamin C Serum  (affiliate link).  For $16.75 for 1 fl oz, InstaNatural offers a fair price point for an excellent product.

Verdict: Yay!

December Birchbox #1 Unboxing & Review

My initial thoughts on December's Birchbox:

All of the goodies that came in one of my Birchboxes for December:

Davines Replumping Set:
I really enjoyed the shampoo and conditioner packs.  They were perfect for traveling over the holidays.  I definitely noticed that my hair had more volume without feeling sticky or frizzy, which some volumizing products do to my hair.  I think that the Superactive Leave-In Treatment was more effective and useful for me though.
Verdict: Meh.

Coola Tinted Matte SPF 30:
This tinted moisturizer has a great smooth texture and definitely leaves skin feeling quite silky.  You know I love some SPF, but I really wish that it had more coverage.  I used this while traveling, and it was nice, but I won't be buying the full-size.
Verdict: Meh.

Essentiel Elements Wake Up Rosemary Body Gel:
This body gel has me wishing that I needed to restock my soap now.  The mix of rosemary, mint oils, and honey made my skin feel silky, totally woke me up in the mornings, and made me pumped for the day.  This definitely made jet lag a little easier to deal with while traveling coast-to-coast for Christmas.
Verdict: Yay!

Sumita Color Contrast Eyeliner:
I was really hoping for wonderful things from this beautiful dark gold hue eyeliner.  I was underwhelmed.  Maybe its just my skin tone?  Maybe it was the eye shadow I paired it with?  I don't know, but I couldn't see it very well.
Verdict: Meh.

Yu-Be Moisturizing Skin Cream:
So apparently this tiny tube contains gold since Birchbox considers something this small to be a regular sample size.  I'm really not impressed that they didn't consider the shampoo & conditioner as my samples even though they're like 4x the size of this tiny tube.  (See that white & orange speck the in the box above?  Yeah.)
Verdict: Meh.
